Volunteer Opportunities

We're always looking for great volunteers for Writers' League of Texas events, including Third Thursday, classes, Texas Book Festival, the San Antonio Book Festival, and our annual Agents & Editors Conference.

Please note that opportunities are open only to current members of the Writers' League of Texas. Keep an eye on this page for updates on upcoming opportunities.

2018 San Antonio Book Festival // April 7, 2018:

The Writers' League of Texas will be exhibiting at the 2018 San Antonio Book Festival. At our booth, we have one table with information about WLT programming, and one table where members of WLT who are authors may promote their books to the general public. We're looking for volunteers to work two-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in San Antonio to assist us with speaking to festival attendees about upcoming WLT events and membership benefits; signing up new members; and managing the schedule of authors promoting their books.

Please email jordan@writersleague.org if you are interested in volunteering at this event. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Texas literary community and to meet the writers and readers of San Antonio!

2018 Agents & Editors Conference // Friday, June 29 - Sunday, July 1, 2018:

The Writers' League of Texas will hosts its 25th Annual Agents & Editors Conference in Austin, TX, this summer. We're looking for volunteers to work throughout the event weekend (each volunteer will be assigned two 4-hour shifts). The event begins on Friday at 11 a.m. and ends on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Duties may include: Greeting and directing attendees to venue rooms, helping at the registration table, working the door at conference events, assisting at breakout sessions, assisting at keynote signing tables, answering questions at the WLT information table, assisting staff with on-site tasks, and more.

  • Volunteers must be available for the entire weekend (from start of event to finish) in order to be eligible.
  • Volunteers will need to be current members of the WLT through the dates of the conference.
  • Volunteers will have access to conference programming when they are not working (including the evening receptions). They will also be able to purchase a ticket to the Keynote Luncheon, as space allows.
  • Volunteers are not eligible for one-on-one consultations with agents and editors (those are for conference registrants only).
  • Volunteers will be asked to help out in the WLT office (4 hours at the most) ahead of the conference as we prep materials and will be required (if volunteering at the event for the first time) to attend an orientation at the conference venue the week before.
  • Volunteers will be responsible for any personal expenses incurred at the event (including parking at the conference venue).

Volunteer spots are limited for this event. If you're interested in volunteering (or if you have any questions about anything detailed here), reach out to us at jordan@writersleague.org or call us at 512-499-8914.

Ongoing: General In-Office Volunteering:

We love to have volunteers in our Austin office to help with administrative tasks, such as organizing, preparing materials for events, or writing letters to our membership. If you'd like to be on our list of volunteers interested in these kind of tasks, please email jordan@writersleague.org. Please note that our office needs fluctuate often, so if you don't hear from us immediately about scheduling an in-office shift, don't dismay! We'll email you as opportunites arise.

Ongoing: Assisting with Writers' League of Texas Classes:

We frequently need volunteers to assist with weekend classes during the spring and fall. Duties include arriving at the class early to set up, administrative tasks, occasional troubleshooting, and returning class paperwork to the WLT offices in a timely manner.

When assistants are not completing their volunteer duties, they are welcome to sit in on the class and participate. This is a great opportunity for someone on a limited budget who wants to take WLT classes. Email michael@writersleague.org for more information.

Please note: We require previous experience either as a WLT volunteer or as a frequent participant in WLT programs for this position. Though WLT staffers are always available by phone for emergencies, a WLT staffer may not always be on site during classes, so this volunteer opportunity requires a high level of comfort with autonomy and independent decision-making. If you're interested in this opportunity but have not yet volunteered with us, please first sign up for one of the other volunteer opportunites listed on this page by emailing jordan@writersleague.org, and let us know that you'd be interested in class assisting in the future.

Don't see an opportunity you're interested in listed here? Shoot us an email, and we'll make sure to email you as new opportunites arise! If you're interested in an internship opportunity, please email jordan@writersleague.org.
