Learn tips, tricks, and timeless advice during this 75 minute presentation from two industry experts who have spent the last 2 decades perfecting publishing pitches of their own.

Attendees will have the opportunity to pitch live and receive immediate feedback (as time allows, and for those brave enough to volunteer) and will come away from this session with concrete ways to get the most out of that ten minutes, including: The top do's and don'ts; how to read your audience and fine tune and adapt your pitch as you go; what does your own body language say about you; key words & phrases to consider including (and a few that you should avoid at all costs); and more.

Lance Fitzgerald - Simon & Schuster Publishing

Lance Fitzgerald has been a Rights professional for nearly 20 years. He joined Simon & Schuster as Rights Director in 2011, prior to that he was Director at Penguin. He has sold foreign, UK, and domestic rights for all genres including business, memoir, history, science, and self-help nonfiction as well as literary, commercial, and even paranormal romantic fiction.

The list of best-selling authors he has worked with includes Mary Higgins Clark, Dale Carnegie & Associates, Vaddey Ratner, Jonah Berger, David McCullough, Walter Isaacson, Kathryn Stockett, Tom Clancy, Spencer Johnson, Neale Donald Walsch, and Seth Godin. He is a member of the Frankfurt Book Fair International Rights Directors Advisory Board, and has spoken at the Columbia and NYU Summer Publishing courses, the Young-to-Publishing Meetings, and at the Slice Writers Conference.

Becka Oliver - Literary Agent, Writers' League of Texas Executive Director

Becka Oliver joined the Writers' League in September 2013 as Executive Director after more than sixteen years of experience working in book publishing. She spent much of her publishing career inside two of the “big six” publishing leaders – Macmillan and Hachette Book Group -- licensing domestic and foreign rights on behalf of countless notable authors, including Sandra Brown, Brad Meltzer, Nicholas Sparks, Jon Stewart and the Daily Show, and more. In 2007, she made the leap from Associate Director of Subsidiary Rights at Grand Central Publishing to Literary Agent, first at Endeavor and then at William Morris Endeavor (WME) after the two powerhouse talent agencies merged in 2009.

As a literary agent, Becka represented clients working in both fiction and non-fiction, including Brunonia Barry, Sheryl Crow, Kamran Pasha, Joanna Philbin, Susan Rebecca White, and the popular blog Awkward Family Photos. A new resident of Austin, Becka has enjoyed exploring Texas on drives into Hill Country and beyond and also enjoys volunteering in her local community for organizations as varied as KUT/KUTX, Austin Bat Cave, the Library Foundation, and I Live Here, I Give Here.
