"Beyond Boy Meets Girl:
Taking Your Love Story to Unexpected Places"

Thursday, February 20, 2014, 7 PM

BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd., 3rd floor*

*(please use the elevator in the back of the store to get to the third floor)

How can writers of love stories - be they romance novels or subplots within our novels, plays, screenplays, etc. - create relatable yet fresh narratives? Do love stories that don't fit the usual mold still count as love stories? How can writers capture emotions and sexual references without coming off as cheesy or off-putting?  How is the craft, market, and audience of romance changing in the new century?

Join us to hear four writers discuss their experiences and give advice.

Our distinguished panelists will be:

Regina Morris

Regina Morris is the author of the humorous paranormal romances that make up The Colony series. Her first two novels were published in 2013, with another two novels and two novellas releasing in 2014. Her plans are to continue writing for her Colony series and to start two more -- an historical romance series and a YA time travel murder mystery series. Regina lives in Austin with her husband and two children. She enjoys meeting with her monthly writing groups and meeting other writers in the Austin area through the WLT events.

Patricia Walters Fischer

During her journey to be a full-time storyteller, Patricia W. Fischer made several stops along the way to be a waitress, bartender, bill-collector, bank teller, clerk at Blockbuster Video, dishwasher, prep-cook, a wanna be crypto-zoologist, and finally settling in as a pediatric and adult trauma/critical care nurse for 10 years before starting her career as a journalist/writer. Now, she spends her time in front of a keyboard, coming up with entertaining stories to pay for her buying too many books habit and the endless cups of coffee she drink on a daily basis. She's also the president of San Antonio Romance Authors. Her first romantic comedy, Weighting for Mr. Right, is now available.

Varian Johnson

Varian Johnson is the author of three novels, including My Life as a Rhombus, which was named to the Texas Library Association Tayshas High School Reading List and the New York Public Library “Stuff for the Teen Age” list, and Saving Maddie, a Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Book.

Varian's most recent work can be seen in the anthology, Open Mic: Riffs on Life Between Cultures in Ten Voices, and his first middle grade novel, The Great Greene Heist, is forthcoming in the summer of 2014 from Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic Press.

Evelyn Palfrey

Evelyn Palfrey is a native Texan and a lawyer who writes romantic suspense for the 'marvelously mature'—because romance is just as sweet with a little gray at the temple. Evelyn is the author of five novels—Three Perfect Men, The Price of Passion, Dangerous Dilemmas, Everything In Its Place and Going Home— and essays in two Chicken Soup releases. She met her agent at the WLT Agents Conference and was subsequently published through Simon & Schuster. Visit Evelyn at
