What’s creative nonfiction? It’s a book about true events that reads like a novel. It has real-life characters who have goals and face conflict, which creates a plot with turning points, a climax, and a resolution -- all of which result in a lesson learned and a life changed.

What’s an interactive class? It’s one that you control by asking questions that determine the direction of the class.

Does that mean it lacks structure? Absolutely not. Just like a great nonfiction book has structure, so does a great creative nonfiction class.

Over the course of a day, we’ll discuss research, interviewing, story, hook, pacing, and characterization. We’ll discuss self-talk, discipline, determination, how to take criticism (constructive and otherwise), and how to bounce back and keep up one’s resolve no matter the circumstances. It’s about craft of writing, but it’s also about self-confidence and marketing – knowing who you are as a writer and how to express that to others so that you’re completely prepared to meet agents and editors.

Who Should Attend?

  • Writers who are contemplating writing a creative nonfiction book
  • Writers who are struggling with creative nonfiction, be that struggle starting, structuring, marketing, or finding themselves blocked in some way
  • Writers registering for the 2013 Agents Conference
  • Writers seeking agents and publishers within the coming months
  • Writers who want to be the best they can be in order to position themselves above the crowd

What to Bring?

  • Your questions – at least three of them
  • Your fears – all of them
  • A one paragraph synopsis of your book – make sure you get it down to one paragraph
  • And if you’ve started writing, the first page of your book and/or one page from your book that’s causing you anxiety
  • Paper and writing utensil – laptops are fine, but please bring paper and pen or pencil too
