A story has two basic units: the sentence and the scene. Most of us learned how to write sentences beginning in kindergarten, and so even if our sentences aren't great, we know what they are and how to approach crafting them. But we often lack this same knowledge for scenes: What are they? How do they start? Where do they end? How do we get from start to end? Without this information—without, in other words, scenes—our stories become just one thing after another, minute-to-minute accounts of the character's actions.

In this class, we will study scenes from a variety of stories: literary and genre novels, short stories, and creative nonfiction. We will identify structures and strategies used by those writers and put them to use in our own work.
