Do you have a nonfiction book idea but are overwhelmed at the prospect of conducting the research and managing that information, much less using it in your writing? This three-hour class provides practical tips on how to plan your research and writing project, how to work efficiently, and how to solve problems that crop up along the way. You’ll learn how to organize the research you collect so that you can quickly access what you need while writing, and stay on a schedule to finish your project.

During this class, you’ll learn:

  • How to create a research plan to work efficiently.
  • Where to find your information, including sources you might not have considered.
  • What research problems you can anticipate and how to solve them.
  • What to expect when using archives for historical research.
  • How to plan and conduct successful interviews and handle notes and recordings.
  • How to organize your materials for easy access while writing.
  • How to build fact-checking into your writing process.
  • How to establish and stick to a writing schedule.

This project is ideal for writers who are planning or researching their first non-fiction project.

Liz Carmack is author of two nonfiction books, Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide (, a travel guide to more than 60 historic hotels across the state, and Rodeo Austin: Blue Ribbons, Buckin’ Broncs, and Big Dreams, which chronicles the rodeo and livestock show’s 70-year-plus history. Both are published by Texas A&M University Press.
