Ready to promote your book but not comfortable with pitching it--and yourself--as an author?

Want to learn practical strategies for modern book publicity?

Books don’t sell themselves. It takes a marketing-savvy author to execute a successful book campaign. This class will introduce promotional strategies for the assertive author and promotional alternatives for those who don’t like being in the limelight. Promotion is not a one-time event. It must be ongoing for as long as you want your book to sell.

In this class, learn the state of publicity in 2017 and heading into 2018, how to match your strengths with the right types of media, how to craft the perfect pitch, and talking points that make it easy for the media to discuss your book. In addition, participants will begin developing a "press pack" for their books.

  • You're preparing for the publication phase of your book. (The strategies apply to both self-published authors and traditionally-published authors looking to supplement their publisher's marketing campaign.)
  • You want to learn modern publicity strategies.
  • You want to build a brand around your writing career and treat it as a business.

Marika Flatt launched PR by the Book, LLC in 2002, combining her love of the media, public relations and books. She previously hosted two cable television shows (The Teen Report & The College Report) in San Antonio, worked with NBC-TV in Dallas, and spent seven years leading the publicity team of an Austin-based book publicity firm, where she was the Director of Publisher Services, handling the company’s key publicity campaigns and serving as the company’s spokesperson. Marika received a Gold Bulldog Award for a publicity campaign that resulted in exposure in over 700 media outlets.

Marika is the recipient of an Austin Public Relations Society of America Outstanding Mentor Award, the Anne D. Robinson Creative Initiative Award, and a nominee for “Profiles in Power”. Marika is a past-president of Women Communicators of Austin, serves as an Expert for IBPA, is listed on Twitter’s Women in Publishing (#womeninpublishing) and serves on the selection committee for the Texas Book Festival. Marika has also been a travel writer for over a decade, serves as the Travel Editor for Texas Lifestyle Magazine, and can be heard on the statewide NPR show “Texas Standard,” giving her Weekend Trip Tips.

Elena Meredith is a senior publicist at PR by the Book in Austin. She has launched hundreds of books for traditionally and independently published authors, working on titles from Patagonia, DK, HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group, Insight Editions and Big Kid Science, among others. She recently helped an author launch his books to space, establishing the reading program Story Time From Space. Elena regularly earns placement with media such as CNN, Foreword Reviews, Huffington Post, Los Angeles TimesParadePublishers Weekly, Shelf Awareness, Sirius XM, USA TodayWashington Post and many more. Elena previously handled PR for Free Spirit Publishing, a children’s educational publisher in Minneapolis. She holds a B.A. in creative writing from University of Tampa.
