Want to give your scenes and pivotal moments more punch?

In the first draft of a manuscript, writers are getting to know their characters, who can surprise, excite, and even disappoint with their choices. By getting to know our characters--their motivations, their hidden shames, their standing in their communities--we can create more authentic scenes and maximize structural efficiency and emotional efficacy. This class will focus on learning who our characters are and how we as writers reveal them to our readers.

TAKE THIS CLASS IF

  • Your characters are lacking definition.
  • Scenes in your story limp along instead of gaining momentum and taking sharp turns.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Rene S Perez II is the author of two books: Along These Highways and Seeing Off the Johns. His decade-plus experience in publishing–manning the slush pile for literary magazines, editing creative works, working with editors on his own fiction–has taught him how to diagnose, tear apart, and rebuild stalled projects. He lives and teaches in Austin, TX.

HOW WRITERS' LEAGUE OF TEXAS CLASSES WORK:

Our classes offer a combination of lecture and practical exercises, determined by the individual instructor, on focused aspects of the craft and business of writing. Your fellow participants will come from a range of writing experience, from beginners to people with MFA degrees and published books. WLT instructors, participants, and administrators all work together to create a welcoming, supportive environment.

If you haven't taken a class with us in recent years, feel free to give us a call at 512-499-8914 if you'd like to discuss whether our programming is the right fit for your needs.
