Introducing an exciting new series: WLT Off the Beaten Craft. A few times a year, the Writers' League of Texas will host a free presentation from an author who knows their stuff, focused on a genre, form, or topic that we don't often get to talk about. These "Off the Beaten Craft" presentations are free and open to all.

About the Event

Fanfiction offers a chance to hone your writing craft and have fun exploring the fictional worlds you love through a deeper engagement with their narrative foundations, storytelling techniques, and even their plot holes. In this Off the Beaten Craft presentation, Katharine will discuss how to use dialogue, action, and character description building to write compelling fanfiction; how fanfiction can inform and improve your original fiction writing process; and where to submit your fanfiction and find readers and community members in your chosen fandom.

About the Presenter

Katharine Duckett is the award-winning author of Miranda in Milan, a Shakespearean fantasy novella debut that NPR calls "intriguing, adept, inventive, and sexy." Her short fiction has appeared in Uncanny, Apex, PseudoPod, Interzone, and Tor.com, as well as various anthologies including Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction and Wilde Stories 2015: The Year's Best Gay Speculative Fiction. She served as the guest fiction editor for Uncanny's Disabled People Destroy Fantasy issue, and is an advisory board member for The Octavia Project, a free program that empowers girls and nonbinary youth in New York City to imagine and engineer new futures.
