As writers, we need to slow down in order to be good observers of our world. While friends and family rush about, we stand back, try to take it all in, and report back in our stories, poems, and memoirs. But when our minds are filled with to-do lists and Internet chatter, how do we unplug? How do we bring our minds to zero?

This fall retreat offers an opportunity to get away from the noise and distractions of everyday life, to spend the day in silence and stillness—and write. Learn what Natalie Goldberg calls, “the true secret of writing”—the combined structure of sitting meditation, slow walking, and writing practice. Dive beneath the surface of your discursive mind into the belly of writing. Discover what you see, think, and feel and lay it on the page.

Class Takeaways:

• Learn and review the basics of writing practice as described by Natalie Goldberg in her groundbreaking book, Writing Down the Bones, and the complementary practices of meditation and slow walking.
• Get past blocks and procrastination and jump into your writing.
• Learn prompts and exercises that shake your mind and access your heart.
• Connect with like-minded writers in a safe and supportive space.
• Experience writing practice as a path to your deepest truth and your most powerful material.

Who Should Attend:

• Beginning writers looking for a place to enter the writing life.
• Experienced writers in need of creative and spiritual reboot.
• Anyone working on a writing project looking to generate fresh material.
• Meditation students wanting to add writing as a complementary practice.
• Writers interested in the relationship between writing and meditation.
