1st Annual Award of Literary Merit

Honoring Ann Patchett

The Writers' League of Texas presented its 1st annual Award of Literary Merit to author and former Guggenheim fellow Ann Patchett on September 30, 2005, at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, Texas.

The evening included a talk by the author, gourmet dinner, live music, and silent auction. Mary Margaret Farabee, co-founder of the Texas Book Festival, was honorary chairperson of the ceremony. Rich Oppel, editor of the Austin American-Statesman, introduced Ms. Patchett.

Ann Patchett is the author of five award-winning books, including the novel Bel Canto -- which received the PEN/Faulkner Award and Orange Prize -- and the Heartland Prize-winning memoir Truth & Beauty. She has written for, among others, the New York Times Magazine; Washington Post; Gourmet; O, The Oprah Magazine; and Paris Review. Patchett is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
