Writers
in the Schools Project WISE: Writers In Schools for EnrichmentThe
2008 season of Project WISE is closed. Thanks to all the participating authors
and schools, as well as the City of Austin. Information on the 2009 season will
be available in January 2009. Authors and schools interested in participating
in 2009 should send contact information to Amanda
King. Project WISE is a partnership of writers in the community with
students in the classroom. The program, sponsored by the Writers' League of Texas
in cooperation with the Austin Independent School District, offers students opportunities
to work with practicing, published writers This project engages children
in the pleasures of writing based on the belief that writing and understanding
are closely related, and that writing provides children with the tools necessary
to examine and understand their lives. Children are encouraged to write in their
own voices about their feelings, memories, families, and communities. The
project also allows writers and authors to share their unique knowledge and experience
which involve the creative writing process. The writers' personal passion about
writing inspires the students, and thereby encourages these students to become
involved and invested in freeing their voice. Who Are the Writers? These
