Writers' League Awards 2008 Journalism Scholarships

Two student journalists and a 76-year-old poet are the 2008 recipients of scholarships issued by the Writers' League of Texas.

The scholarships are awarded each year by the League's Bess Whitehead Scott Scholarship Fund, which was named for one of the state's ground-breaking women journalists. In 1915, Scott was the first woman to gain entry-and win acceptance-in the newsroom of The Houston Post. She not only had a successful career as a newspaper reporter but also in teaching and advertising. Scott was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1994. She died three years later at 107.

The Bess W. Scott scholarship winners, receiving $1,500 each are:

Jackie Baylon
Alex Hering
Margaret Anderegg

Jackie Baylon
Texas State University-San Marcos

Jackie, 20, is a college sophomore, specializing in electronic media. She also reports for The University Star. Her immediate goal is to become a television news reporter. Jackie says she is drawn to the field for the opportunity of "meeting people, being informed and never being bored." She is from Santa Teresa, N.M. Jackie is the recipient of a scholarship awarded in memory of the late Felton West, a long-time reporter and state Capitol correspondent for The Houston Post.

Alex Hering
Texas State University-San Marcos

Alex, 20, receives the Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship. The college sophomore, who has a "passion to report the news," works on the campus newspaper, The University Star. Hering, who is from El Paso, says her plans are to work as a newspaper reporter and photographer, then teach high school journalism.

Margaret Anderegg University of Texas of the Permian Basin

Margaret, 76, of Odessa was tapped for the Scott Scribes Scholarship for Older Adults (40 and older). She is pursuing studies in journalism and creative writing, and has already published a book of poetry. The widow, who raised five children, has worked in teaching, book sales, child care and the family carpentry business. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2006, Margaret was chosen "Volunteer of the Year" by the Odessa Council of the Arts.
